When I decided I would travel for three weeks this summer in July to France and Spain, I dreamt of beautiful beaches, lovely cities and idyllic villages, incredible coastal views and hikes, great food, and a laidback atmosphere.
It is easy to find fashion inspiration in the magic of the Mediterranean. The characteristic features of the sea, from its colors, coasts and climate, to its traditions and cultural roots.
These are your must-haves to pack for this region:
Item #1 - Maxi dresses
A summer essential and timeless staple, maxi dresses are a must for your suitcase. Think relaxed silouettes, crisp white cottons or silk for Saint Tropez, romantic florals in Antibes, Bohemian knits in Ibiza, and flowing linen or a basic tee paired with a skirt or shorts in Mallorca. White or neutral colors channel those dreamy coastal vibes. Earth tones like sand, olive green, and terracotta also reflect the natural beauty of the Mediterranean landscape.
Item #2 - Comfortable shoes
Getting lost in the quaint cobblestone streets, hiking to a hidden rocky beach, and sipping cocktails while a dj spins to the sunset, whether day or night, it's all about comfort. Think strappy sandals, espadrills, and kitten heals along with a sturdy pair of sneakers or water shoes you can throw in your bag for hiking and handling the rocky coast.
"Mediterranean Fashion should be the fashion of the well-being, of discreet elegance, comfort and sustainability."
Item #3 - Tote bag
A mediterranean-style market bag with a semi-circle shape with a wide, deep-bowl bottom or a traditional woven basket bag is an absolute must for functionality and style. Keep in mind a small backpack also is useful for longer and more strenuous hikes.
Item #4 - Make up
Light and natural is the way to go. Dewy skin, bronzed cheeks, and a pop of color on the lips offer a fresh, sun-kissed glow. Remember to leave some room for the very best beauty and high quality skin care products you will pick up at the pharmacy. You can find lovely moisturizers at a good price, the sunscreens are the gold standard, and fantastic body products that you cannot find in the US.
Tip #5 - Sunnys and other accessories
Swimsuit, sunglasses, snacks and a snorkel, in that order.
The goal of the overall look should be fresh, clean, and effortless. Mediterranean architecture and style reflect the environment’s natural beauty. Don't overthink it and be sure to leave room for a couple of new pieces you are bound to find and bring home with you!
Happy Travels!
